Our department stands at the crossroads of antiquity.

Here the ancient cultures of Greece and Rome meet those of the Near East and India. Here a philosopher of Athens meets a poet from Spain, a warrior king of Babylon meets a desert saint, Sappho meets Constantine, Krishna meets Heracles, Moses meets Plato.  It’s a place of reunions and new directions, general hubbub, and often a guy selling sausages.

Our history as a department extends back to the 18th century, but we are aimed at the 22nd. We combine intellectual rigour and openness of ideas, with a wide range of classes covering history, religion, philosophy, literature, and art and emphasizing the way all these subjects are intertwined.

At the undergraduate level we offer degrees in Classics and in Religious Studies: Majors, Minors, Honours, and Combined Honours, while our MA in Classics offers students an exceptional opportunity to craft a programme of study tailored to their scholarly and career goals.  For students wanting the most out of the civilisations we study, we offer courses in a remarkably wide range of ancient languages (Ancient Greek, Latin, Biblical Hebrew, Sanskrit, and Arabic), putting you into direct contact with the original words of the ancient texts.

Whether you’re a dedicated specialist or just interested in taking a class about the ancient world, come join us at the crossroads: there’s a lot to talk about.
